Here is an update to the Handbook of Online and Social Media Research.

At the recent AMSRS Conference in Australia I was a keynote speaker and produced a set of notes that are a partial update to the book. I would love to hear people’s thoughts about the ideas in this update.

Click here to access the update.

Another way to stay up-to-date with online and social media research is to follow NewMR, especially the Festival.

Over the next few weeks this website is going to spring into action. Although the final details are not quite sorted out it is likely that teh site will provide the following:

Links from the book, allowing easier access to anybody who has bought a copy.

Corrections and name changes (quite a few services have already changed their names, locations, or addresses).

Case studies – entire studies that will cover additional sectors and additional countries.

New material for the book, including sections and chapters.

Links to third-party resources, including blogs and reviews.

Interviews with leading people, brands, and products.

These body of the front page of this site will hold the latest post. The really useful bit will be listed on the right hand side of the page, under the heading Pages.

This site will not include product reviews, news, and discussions, there are plenty of other sites for those, for example Tim Macer’s reviews and the NewMR discussion group in LinkedIn.

As part of the launch of the HOSMR website I held a Webinar on Thursday 16 December at 3:30pm. A recording of the Webinar can be accessed below:

One thing that makes the Festival of NewMR very different from most market research events is that most of it is free and even the Main Stage webinar is available for just $24 for a 6 hour session or $50 for the whole 22 hours.

Another high point of the Festival is the Poster competition, sponsored by the Handbook of Online and Social Media Research. The Poster competition is open to all and the winner will receive $1000.

The winning poster wil the one that best answers the question “What is the next BIG idea in understanding consumer needs and wants?”

The Festival also have a Video competition, sponsored by NIPO, and the prize for the Video competition is also $1000 and is open to all.

People are beginning to contact me to say that Amazon.co.uk have told them that their copy of my book has been dispatched. As a follow up I intend to gather as many thoughts and ideas as possible about what is not in the book. Firstly, to share with everybody, and secondly as research for a) an updated book in the future, b) other projects.

I will be posting details of how this will work shortly.

The Handbook of Online and Social Medial Research will be published on August 13th.

The last edits to the book have gone to the typesetters and the book is due to be published on August 13th.

Between now and then I need to get this website up to scratch and to start accumulating information for the second edition, which will probably be needed in a couple of years.

I can already see that some parts of the book are becoming out of date, such as the reference to LinkedIn providing B2B sample (they stopped recently) and Kevin Rudd’s Prime Ministerial tweeting (he is no longer Prime Minister of Australia).

This website is going to contain a variety of resources to complement the book, including: lists of blogs, software, reviews, and links to other resources.

A number of people have already pre-ordered the book, which is very pleasing. If you want to check it out online you can find it at Amazon.com. It is also available from Amazon.co.uk.

I am also starting to look at two other book ideas and a booklet. The books are a market research handbook for quantitative analysis, from crosstabs to conjoint, and a review, probably a collaborative review of how to extract insight from online discussions.

The booklet is likely to be a “Busy exec’s guide to social media”. More on these projects soon.
